THE FORMULA FOR WINNING AT COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Handicapping college basketball requires different skills and knowledge than Pro basketball.

The average bettor does not realize that. The average bettor who handicaps on his own uses the same type of information, the same type of stats and the same type of handicapping systems to pick both the colleges and the pros.

That’s why the average bettor loses.

In what ways do the college games vary from Pro games?

1. More Teams… There are 32 NBA teams. There are over 300 college squads that will be on the board during the year.

2. Less National Information… Newspapers, TV and sports magazines cover the NBA to the point where even the average person can find out which player has a pimple on his big toe that is bothering him. Most college teams do not receive coverage outside of their area, unless they are playing a cross-country game or in the Top Ten in the ESPN or Coaches Poll. For example, unless you live in El Paso, you’re not going to get much solid information on UTEP.

3. Under the Radar Teams… Big money is bet on every NBA team every night. In college ball, just a fraction of what might be bet on a Duke or Syracuse or Michigan State will be placed wagered on a Iona or a Kent State or a Valparaiso. Because these games pose no real threat to the financial well being of the sports books or casino, less effort is put into making a right line. And, mistakes can be found there.

4. Maturity Level… Pro players are in business. Although basketball is a emotional game of runs, NBA teams are less prone to big emotional swings. College players, however, are prone to emotional letdowns after a big game against a tough opponent where they left it all on the court, win or lose. The following game they are often flat and ripe for a loss.

5. Depth! The top 25 college teams do not necessarily have significantly better talent among their starters than teams that struggle or small schools that participate in Division 1. But, the top teams do have depth at back up and during the season when it’s late in the year and games are on the line their best players are fresher because they have been spelled more often by competent backups.

6. Disparity! Even the weakest NBA team is made up of pros. Analysts can judge the strength of a team by who it beats and who it loses to or struggles against. Many college teams play early “cupcake” schedules. So the average bettor and even many so-called professional handicappers don’t know how to judge their true strength when faced with an opponent that should be equal in skill.

These differences result in more bad lines. Those who don’t adjust to the college game and treat them accordingly will lose.
