This Sunday, September 26, is looking like it may go a long way in defining the rest of the season. Many teams are already feeling a sense of desperation and see some of this week’s games as “must win”.
3) Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings
Hopes started high for Detroit this season and expectations were Super Bowl or Bust for the Vikings. That was before Lions QB Matt Stafford suffered a shoulder injury and before “Bad Brett” took the place of “Good Brett” from last season for the Vikings. Both teams are winless and seem to be grasping for anything positive. Statistically, the teams look to be an even match, even though three weeks ago everyone was marking this as an automatic win for the Vikings. QB Brett Favre for the Vikings is still looking to find his rhythm, meanwhile, QB Shaun Hill knows that he is likely just keeping the seat warm for Stafford’s eventual return. It is a must win for both teams as each are trying to stay alive.
2) New York Jets at Miami Dolphins
Miami is riding high after a 2-0 start. QB Chad Henne is looking great early on, 30-49 for almost 300 yards and one touchdown. Having beaten in-state rival Tampa Bay and preseason favorite Minnesota, expectations are growing for the Dolphins. Meanwhile, the Jets lost its opener against Baltimore. That loss was avenged by a thorough beating of the Patriots in Week 2. However, more off the field drama has unfolded for the Jets as star WR Braylon Edwards was arrested earlier in the week for DWI. He is not expected to start, but he will play. With the Jets being somewhat lenient on him, this may come back to bite them later in the season if Commissioner Roger Goodell brings down the hammer as he usually does. Both teams are looking to establish themselves as the team to beat in the AFC East and this game will go a long way in determining that.
1) Dallas Cowboys at Houston Texans
For many years, the Cowboys have been “America’s Team” but this game is about Texas and which team is the dominant force. This NFC/AFC match up is a big one for both teams. The Cowboys are desperate for a win having started 0-2 with losses to the Bears and Bengals. With a touch match up against Tennessee coming up next week, Dallas is looking to find some sort of momentum for the rough stretch ahead. The Texans, on the other hand, are looking as if they are one of the strongest teams in the NFL. They lead the NFL in rushing yards behind RB Arian Foster while QB Matt Schaub already has over a third of a mile of passing yards in just two games. Last week, they showed they can win the tight one when they beat a reloaded Redskins team. Dallas has a rough schedule ahead, playing the Titans and then at Minnesota before facing Eli Manning’s Giants. Houston, on the other hand, has an easier road ahead of them, at Oakland, then at home versus the Giants and Kansas City. The momentum for this next stretch of games could easily be determined by this Sunday’s match up.
